all about
The Bahati Project

The Bahati Project is a Canadian registered charity which supports the Tengeru Village Development Centre in Tanzania. Tengeru Village Development Centre provides free Early Childhood Development and School Readiness programs, along with weekday meals (breakfast, lunch and snacks!) for 80 vulnerable children aged 3-6yrs. The program provides vital nutrition for the children – for many, the only meals they would get are provided by the centre – as well as important developmental supports.

According to UNICEF – more than 3.2 million Tanzanian children aged 7-17yrs are not in school with 1.2 million never attending school at all. This is for many complex reasons relating to multi-dimensional poverty. When children get the right start in Early Childhood, the likelihood of their success at school and continuing with their education is significantly increased.

Hunger, especially during critical periods of brain development, can significantly impair cognitive and emotional development. Inadequate nutrition, particularly the lack of essential nutrients like iron, protein, and vitamins, can lead to delayed development, reduced cognitive function, and increased risk of mental health issues.

Play is essential in early childhood. It significantly contributes to cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. Through play, children explore their environment, develop problem-solving skills, build social skills, and learn to regulate their emotions.

The Bahati Project addresses all these complex issues by providing a free, safe, supportive, play based centre for 80 vulnerable children in the Tengeru village aged 3-6yrs. The meals program is not only vital to development and learning, but it is often the only meal the children receive.

The co-founders of The Bahati Project have been to Tanzania multiple times and absolutely love Arusha and the surrounding areas. The people are so kind, welcoming, and truly beautiful. The landscape is unbelievable with views of Mount Meru and of course Mount Kilimanjaro. The children at Tengeru and across Tanzania greet you with open arms and huge smiles.

The Bahati Project originally started by supporting three projects in Arusha - Tengeru Village (Meru View at the time), Pippi House Safe Home for Girls and the Newlands Orphanage. The Bahati Project has evolved to solely supporting Tengeru Village Development Centre as other external support diminished throughout the years shifting our ability to support all three projects.

The Bahati Project is the sole funder for Tengeru Village Development Centre's facility, staff, meals, education, and more through donations, sponsorships and funds raised at various local events.
